On 22nd July, 1947 the current form
of the flag was accepted as the National Flag of India in a meeting at the
constituent assembly. The flag is of the dimension 2:3 and is striped with
three colour bands, Saffron, White and Green, insignia of courage and sacrifice,
truth and purity and lastly prosperity respectively. Ashok Chakra in the middle
containing 24 equally spaced spokes signifies righteousness. The national flag
was based on the flag of the Indian National Congress designed by Pingali
Venkayya.
The
top saffron colour, indicates the strength and courage of the country. The
white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The green shows
the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
Its
design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion
Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the width of the white band and
it has 24 spokes.
