On 5th September 1986, the world witnessed an act of unmatched bravery when Neerja Bhanot, a 23-year-old flight attendant, sacrificed her life while protecting passengers during the Pan Am Flight 73 seizure in Karachi. At such a young age, she showed extraordinary courage, guiding passengers to safety, hiding passports to protect Americans, and standing fearlessly in front of a threat until her very last breath.
For her heroism, Neerja Bhanot was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. Even decades later, her story continues to inspire millions, reminding us that true courage is about selflessness and humanity.
Neerja is not just remembered as a brave flight attendant but as a symbol of India’s courage, sacrifice, and resilience. Her legacy lives on, teaching generations the value of compassion and bravery in the face of adversity.
Just remembering on her death ceremony doesn't make it all.Her sacrifice is demanding her worth. There should be an airport or atleast a terminal in her name to remind people generation after generation about her sacrifice.
I think we should have a subject in our school syllabus....
Know your legacy
The book will dedicate 1 chapter to all our heroes those who showed exemplary courage, determination, a zeal to succeed, to live their dreams, to fight for the nation.
That book will embibe patriotism & a will bring about sea change in the way students think, & strive to achieve their dreams.
This bravery, selfless sacrifice, and dedication to duty need to be included in our curriculum. Let the new generation know the power of the country's women. Only then will we truly pay tribute to Neerja Bhanot.
